Org. Setting and ReportingThe Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights internship is for a period of two to six months depending on the needs of the Section.
The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns are not staff members of the Organization and do not represent it in any capacity.
Interns work five days per week.
This internship is located in the Rule of Law, Equality and Non-Discrimination Branch.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the direct supervision of the respective Chief of Section or Chief of the Branch, the incumbent will:
Undertake research, conduct analysis and assist in drafting of reports, guidance materials, notes and publications on the following issues:
•Women, peace and security, violence against women, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender stereotypes, women’s human rights defenders, gender integration, sexual orientation, gender identity, for the Women’s Rights and Gender Section;
•Rule of law and democracy from the human rights perspective, for the Rule of Law and Democracy Section;
•Rights of indigenous peoples and minorities, for the Indigenous and Minorities Section;
•And issue of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance (racism and sport, role of media in combating intolerance and incitement to hatred) for the Anti-Racial Discrimination Section.
Provide substantive and logistical assistance to the organization of expert group meetings, workshops, consultations, seminars, panels, side events at the Human Rights Council on the subjects related to each Section, accordingly;
Contribute to develop online and face to face training material on the subjects mentioned above, depending on the Section;
Liaise with OHCHR field officers on the thematic areas relevant to each Section and participate in interagency meetings, meetings with permanent missions and with human rights activists.
The incumbent will also assist to any of the following areas of work: the mandate of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights to Indigenous Peoples, the UN Voluntary Fund on Indigenous Peoples, the Minorities Fellowship Programme and the Indigenous Fellowship Programme; the follow-up mechanisms of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action of the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related intolerance as well as the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, Working Group of Experts on People of African descent and the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of Complementary Standards; support in the organization of the annual Fellowship Programme for people of African descent.
Any other relevant tasks as requested by the respective Chief of Section or Chief of the Branch.

Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients ” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view ; establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect ; identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions ; monitors on-going developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems ; keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects ; meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
EducationTo qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
(c) Have graduated with a university degree, as defined above, and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Work ExperienceNo professional work experience is required for participation in the Internship Programme.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset.
